Engine Will Not Start

• Old fuel: Drain stale gasoline and refill with fresh fuel before starting the snow blower.
• Choke setting: Use full choke for cold starts, then slowly move to run once the engine warms.
• Spark plug issue: Inspect, clean, gap, or replace the spark plug if the engine cranks but will not fire.
• Fuel blockage: Check the primer bulb, fuel line, carburetor bowl, fuel shutoff, and filter screen for blockage.

Auger or Impeller Not Turning

• Broken auger belt: Remove the belt cover and inspect the auger belt for cracking, glazing, stretching, or breakage.
• Shear pins broken: Replace damaged shear pins or shear bolts with correct MTD-compatible hardware only.
• Loose auger cable: Adjust the auger engagement cable if the control handle moves but the auger does not rotate.
• Impeller jam: Shut off the unit and check for ice, gravel, sticks, or packed snow inside the housing.

Poor Snow Throwing Performance

• Clogged chute: Stop the engine, remove the key, wait for all moving parts to stop, then clear the chute with the clean-out tool.
• Heavy wet snow: Reduce ground speed and take narrower passes to prevent chute clogging.
• Worn scraper blade: Replace the scraper blade, shave plate, or skid shoes if snow is left on the surface.
• Loose drive or auger belt: Check belt tension and replace worn belts if throwing distance becomes weak.

Drive System Problems

• No forward or reverse movement: Inspect the traction cable, drive belt, friction wheel, wheel pins, axle keys, and linkage adjustment.
• Slipping while moving: Replace worn friction disc rubber or adjust the drive control cable.
• Wheels not locking: Check axle pins and wheel engagement settings on models with selectable drive wheels.

Chute, Controls, and Electric Start

• Chute will not rotate: Inspect chute crank, gear teeth, cable routing, frozen linkage, and packed snow around the chute base.
• Deflector stuck: Remove ice buildup and lubricate chute deflector pivot points.
• Electric start not working: Confirm outlet power, inspect the extension cord, and check starter button or starter motor connections.
• Headlight not working: Check bulb, wiring harness, and engine alternator output on equipped models.

Safety note: Always shut off the engine, remove the ignition key, disconnect the spark plug wire, and wait for all moving parts to stop before service. Never clear the chute or auger housing by hand.
